The Association of Language Companies (ALC) has held its first UNConference at the PGA National hotel in Palm Beach, Florida on February 6. This enthusiastic gathering surprised us all by meeting and exceeding our expectations in terms of learning and networking.

The UNConference was designed as an informal get together of Language companies. Members met in a non-competitive atmosphere to exchange information, discuss issues in the language services industry, and learn from experts in specific fields related to language services. The UNConference provided ALC members with the tools and education necessary for management and growth.

I was pleasantly surprised by the dynamic format of the meetings.  The conference was refreshingly interactive and informal, which allowed free and easy discussions among the participants. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. Some of the most interesting conversations were held poolside!

The theme—and every discussion—was about the languages services industry. At other conferences, attendees are spoken to. Here, everyone speaks with. This format provided a lively forum with direct answers and questions.

Questions revolved around the major language technology trends and tools, the current state of the industry, the future of the industry, processes and techniques, common concerns and interests, regional topics, growth opportunities and challenges. Since translation and globalization pertain to all languages, the conference encompassed all regions of the world and welcomed participants coming from different countries, who discussed foreign standards, procedures, and sales.

In the last hour of the conference, suggestions were made about the next venue, and everyone asked for more meetings and more participation. The Board members are finalizing the industry survey, which will be available on February 18.

I am looking forward to the next ALC conferences!
