A Global Event: International Women’s Day

March 5, 2013 |

International Women's DayInternational Women’s Day (IWD) will be celebrated this year on March 8, 2013. The idea began in the early 1900s, when a restlessness and urgency was brewing among women who began campaigning for women’s rights. The first official National Woman’s Day was observed across the United States on February 28, 1909. The following year, 1910, an international event was suggested at the Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen.

The 2013 theme is The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum. Women’s organizations all over the world will celebrate “the achievements of women while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change. There is global momentum for championing women’s equality.” Thousands of events all over the world will take place in February and March.

Previous themes have included: World Free of Violence Against Women, Women at the Peace Table, and Women and HIV/AIDS.

There is now an official website for all news and information regarding this day.

*Go to the events page: Find your country of origin or where you will be on March 8, and join the festivities at that location. Visitors are encouraged to add information about new events and newly involved areas.

* The website displays those corporations and other entities that support IWD events.

*Posters, banners, videos and other promotional material are available on the International Women’s Day website.
