Tsiuri P.Tsiuri P. was born and lives in Tbilisi, Georgia in the USSR. She studied Aviation in school in Tbilisi and has been a translator for 20 years. Tsiuri specializes in the legal, government, military, technical and medical fields and works with European organizations and companies such as Twinning and TACIS. What are some of the unique complexities in translating from English to your language?

Georgian text has different grammar and the sentences are much longer.

What is your favorite type of translation project and why?

I like any type of translation in which I can explore new language opportunities. I like working in the technical, aviation, and political translation fields.

Who are most of your clients that need help with translation?

I work with leading United States IT and medical companies and entities in the European aviation sector.

What are the issues or problems that you are asked most frequently to help solve?

I get a lot of requests to work on general proofreading. I prefer to use CAT tools when it comes to translating large volumes. CAT tools provide an opportunity for methodic and consistent translation. I believe that CAT tools are absolutely necessary when several translators work together and the results have to be localized. I work with CAT tools but I don’t put them before my own skills. I personally prefer those with user-friendly interfaces and enough flexibility. I should be able to view the whole layout of the document and its different segments with ease. Some translation tools are bulky and clumsy. I prefer those fulfilling their main function: translation. Commands should be carried out quickly; I should not have to wait. Preferably the installation is done easily and without long preliminary training. Simplicity and accuracy are the main assets of these programs.

How do you view your role as a messenger of knowledge between different cultures?

A bad translator can spoil relations between cultures.
