by | Jun 25, 2013 | Alpha Omega News

KapkaKapka L. was born in Ruse, Bulgaria and she currently lives in Sofia, Bulgaria.

After attending University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia, Bulgaria, Kapka graduated from the English Language School in Ruse. Kapka specializes in translation services in tourism, general engineering, development, design, architecture, structural and civil engineering. She has been a translator for 17 years and speaks English, Russian and Bulgarian.

What are some of the unique complexities in translating from English to your language?

Style and grammar.

What do you enjoy about your work?

I approach my duties with interest, desire and high sense of responsibility. Being satisfied with my job makes me more proficient, and brings me inner peace and emotional satisfaction.

What are the issues or problems that you are asked most frequently to help solve?

They vary. A translator needs an in-depth knowledge of languages and familiarity with the subjects of the texts they are translating. I am usually faced with a variety of challenges with my work. For example, one of the main issues are the cultural problems in translation. There are terms, idioms, and phrases that are specific to one language and culture, and it is very challenging (and sometimes difficult) to find an equivalent in another language. Other problems that I usually face are related to names of people and places, date formats and measurements, and also the proper use of capitalization. Abbreviations could also be misunderstood and sometimes cannot be translated. In order to solve all these problems, I constantly enhance my knowledge in particular industries and improve the quality of my work.

What do think would help to improve translation in general?

The translator should read and understand the text perfectly. He/She should research and acquire relevant information to complete the translation project with the highest quality standards possible. Additional proofreading and feedback will help the translator improve his/her translations in the long run.

How do you view your role as a messenger of knowledge between different cultures?

My experience in this area includes translations of a number of documents for the EU (European Union), various political documents, and texts related to community organizing and problems of people with disabilities and disadvantaged people.

Human beings use language to express inner thoughts and emotions, to make sense of complex and abstract thought, to communicate with others, to fulfill our wants and needs, to establish rules and to maintain our culture.

Language is the general form of communication among different nations. The very words that are used to connect people, though, at the same time can divide them. The different languages that people speak can create a number of communication difficulties between nations. That makes the translator’s role extremely important and relevant. The translator has the capacity to enhance people’s understanding of development issues and indigenous cultures by mediating ideas across cultural and national boundaries. Translation could help with the integration of human societies. It could help with the transfer of technology and wisdom.
