What is Kurdish?
Kurdish is the native language of the Kurdish people, an ethnic group with Middle Eastern origins. Kurdish isn’t tied to any one country in particular as Kurds live in parts of Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Syria. This area is sometimes referred to as Kurdistan.
Kurdish is one of the official languages of Iraq because there are more than three provinces in northern Iraq where Kurds make up the majority of the population. This area of Iraq, called Iraqi Kurdistan, is an autonomous region with a Kurdish governing body.

About the Kurdish Language
Kurdish is a dialect continuum, which means that Kurdish is actually a spectrum of dialects rather than one language.
The way a dialect continuum works is that dialects farther away from each other geographically can be very different, while those closer to each other are very similar. The Kurdish dialects have been grouped into three categories: Northern Kurdish or Kurmanji, Southern Kurdish or Pehlewani, and Central Kurdish or Sorani. Kurmanji is the widely spoken with 15- 20 million people.
The Kurdish people have long faced discrimination, which many times took the form of banning or restricting the use of the Kurdish language. Because of this Kurdish can be written at least three different ways as different writers have used different regional scripts.
Because of the variety of dialects in Kurdish, it’s important to have translation specific to the area you are targeting. At Alpha Omega Translations it’s our priority to ensure your translations are accurate and culturally relevant, which is why our translators work specifically with their native region on Kurdish.
